Pakistan’s ruling party hails Muslim London mayor’s win over “millionaire Jew”


The PML (N), which you can see mentioned on the lower left of the sign, is the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), the party of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the majority party in the nation’s National Assembly. Islamic anti-Semitism is deeply ingrained: Qur’anic passages such as its claim that the Jews are the worst enemies of the Muslims (5:82), under the curse of Allah (9:30) and transformed by him into apes and pigs (2:63-65; 5:59-60; 7:166) lead men in far-off Pakistan to think the most important aspect of Sadiq Khan’s victory is that he defeated a Jew.

The election of a Pakistani bus driver’s son as the mayor of London was greeted with celebration on Saturday in Pakistan, from where Sadiq Khan’s parents emigrated to Britain in the 1960s.

News of Khan’s win in the British capital featured on the front pages of all major Pakistani newspapers on Saturday, while also causing a stir on social media.

‘Congratulations @SadiqKhan 4 being elected mayor of London,’ tweeted Bilawal Bhutto, leader of the opposition Pakistan People’s Party and son of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

‘British Pakistanis need a role model,’ he added.

Rival opposition leader and former cricketer Imran Khan – whose ex-wife Jemima is the sister of Sadiq Khan’s principal opponent Zac Goldsmith – also tweeted his congratulations to the new mayor.

Elsewhere on social media most Pakistanis appeared to greet Khan’s win with pride, with messages marking the recent successes of other high-profile British Muslims – including former One Direction member Zayn Malik, who also has Pakistani heritage – going viral on Saturday….
